Earthworm

I've got my fingers in the earth and an earthworm in my sights
I hope I don't wake up to new bug bites
I act braver than I am and my fears live under rocks
but we turned them over one by one until my only fear was the setting sun
I am overexposed but I don't want to go home
I want this summer to last forever and to never put on another sweater
Nature is more than just a luxury to me it's a space to build a home
between the soft grass and cotton candy sunsets
and when night falls I ride my bike faster than I should
and my lights scare the neighbourhood skunks
but where's the fun in life without a little late night funk?
I am overexposed and I don't want to go home
I want this summer to last forever and to never put on another sweater
I've got my head up in the clouds and tomorrow in my sights
and if it rains again, this time I won't mind

I'm too tired to detect the sarcasm in the room tonight
so when I tell you that silly story I probably won't tell it right
I move my feet too fast, my lungs can't keep up
I am crashing, I am crashing, I am crashing
like the trees knocked over from the winters melt and the way it felt to talk about it
the days blend into one and I can never seem to tell
when I've reached the end of one
the setting sun is just a sign of more fun to come
I've been listening to new music again,
or at least music that's new to me
I feel so happy, so seen
I can't believe I'm not the only retired emo teen
who lived through that nightmare dream where they couldn't tell if everyone hated them or was afraid of them cause of the colour of their skin
It's a lack of pop culture knowledge
it's a fear of never fitting in
it's the tears after being told to not talk so loud and being asked to not raise your hand in class
it's the oh so memorable birthday party where nobody showed up
there were more lifeguards than limbs in the pool and I felt like such a fool
so when I tell you I'm too tired to detect the sarcasm in the room tonight
and when I tell you that silly story and I don't tell it right
I hope you understand

September

What am I doing?
I've got more fruitflies than dreams in my eyes
and the leaves are turning gold
but I can't be sold on the thought of leaving everything behind
so I lace up my skates and hope that the uneven sidewalk doesn't win today
and I catch up with my friends while they're chugging lattes at 8pm
but the tailend of summer is giving me all the energy I need
But
what's next for me?
what's next for me?
what's next for me?
This is my first September of extreme uncertainty.
